We wish to make a positive difference to the communities in which we operate and we do this by focusing on issues that are important for our business, our team members, our customers and our local communities.
At Myer, we believe it is up to all of us to challenge the culture, behaviours and attitudes that lead to violence against women and children, and that supporting and empowering women benefits us all.
Through our partnerships and our influence, we seek to address the pressing issues of women having greater financial security and independence, gender equity and respect, and the rights of vulnerable women and children to live in safe family environments, and in safe communities.
We do this by partnering with leading organisations seeking to address measures of change, prevention and meeting the needs of the vulnerable for a safer future. Our key community partnerships include:
About: White Ribbon's vision is that all women live in safety, free from violence and abuse. Its mission is to make women's safety a man's issue too. Through education, awareness raising campaigns, violence prevention programs and partnerships, they highlight the positive role men play in preventing men's violence against women and inspire them to be leaders in this social change.
Supported program: Myer and the Myer Community Fund supports the roll out and implementation to 360 schools and their communities across Australia through Breaking the Silence - an award winning, whole-of-community program that engages schools, businesses, local services, police and families in violence prevention.
About: For women who dream of a better future for themselves and their families, Global Sisters helps to unlock raw potential and talent. Global Sisters is about supporting women in vulnerable situations to get back on their feet and become financially secure and independent by equipping them with all the resources they require to accelerate an idea into a fully operational micro business or social enterprise.
Supported program: Myer and the Myer Community Fund supports ‘Curation with a Conscience', a program which enables financially excluded women to develop their own micro businesses. An investment, not a handout, the Sisters create beautiful marketable products that are handmade, ethical and luxe, with each business having its own story of spirit, pride and a creator who is standing tall. As the businesses grow, they provide further employment opportunities to other Sisters also trapped in the poverty cycle, creating a much needed flexible alternative to welfare dependency for Australian women.
About: The Salvation Army helps more than one million disadvantaged Australians each year without discrimination, including people who are hungry, homeless, abandoned or abused. Family violence continues to be the primary reason women seek help from homeless services and the Salvos, as the largest provider of homeless services in Australia assists people to remaining safely in their home or find alternative safe accommodation for them and their family.
Supported program: Myer and the Myer Community Fund supports a number of crisis accommodation and support services across Australia for women and their children fleeing a violent home situation and in urgent need for somewhere safe to live. Once the immediate need is met, women are connected with other support services required such as transitional housing support, counselling, court support, children's services, financial assistance, and referrals.
